Durbin does to GOP what Dean did to us.

He said the GOP supports torture and Gitmo is a discrace to America.  Google his name for the quote.

This is our wedge.  They got all pissy and gave it media coverage see Drudge etc.  Problem is America agrees with us.  We win.  But more importantly the rank and file GOP agrees with us.  Torture is not just un-American it is also un-Christian AND un-Republican (at least pre W republican).  Simple issue ordinary Americans know where they stand and know who to side with and its us.

Dean with the Christian comments needs to learn from those who are doing it right.  The stand up and fight attitude is right but if you point the wrong end of the gun and pull the trigger it doesn't make you a hero.

The rank and file GOP (3.00 / 6)

also agree with Howard Dean's statements.  The average Republican does NOT like that their party has been taken over by religious zealots.

Dean opened a dialogue on this.  He said nothing wrong at all.

Good for Durbin, though, he is getting the flak, too.  I was proud of him.

THEY JUST DON'T GET IT... (none / 0)

Why don't you read the record of the comments in context..- at the link below

http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getpage.cgi?dbname=2005_record&page=S6594&position=a ll

(note that you can also manipulate the URL to get other pages..see the gpo.gov website for details)

I think Durbin's comments were accurately describing the amoral situation at guantanamo bay and the ugly implications of an administration that sees itself above the law..

it resembles the parallel government structures of totalitarian states.. completely unaccountable...

Thats what Durbin was saying.. and THEY JUST DON'T GET IT..

I see this again and again.. its as if the GOP core group doesn't understand what democracy is or why it is important..

its not just another charade that keeps the elite in power, nomatter what.. it means that the government DOES ULTIMATELY HAVE TO ANSWER TO US, THE PEOPLE..

Thats the lesson the Europeans learned so well after WWII, that to fight fascism, you need a VERY high dedication to transparency..

The people need to be able to examine WHAT the government does.. in every possible detail..

And WHO does it.. WHO says WHAT - And WHY

We clearly are forgetting that..

Will it mean that we will find ourselves reliving the dark days of WWII, - with us as the bad guys? I hope not!

But it could happen...

THAT is what Durbin was warning us against..

He has a lot of courage.. this guy is a hero in my book for standing up to these real-life Darth Vaders..

..seriously..

That is what democracy is all about..

And this is its darkest hour since this nations founding..

Why do you seem upset with me? (none / 0)

I commended Durbin in my post while saying that most of the rank and file Republicans know that Dean has a point about white and Christian.

The rank and file don't have a voice in their party, though.

Am I misreading your post?  I agree with Durbin and think he is courageous.  I agree with Dean and think he is courageous.

Re: Why do you seem upset with me? (2.00 / 2)

Rank and file don't have a voice??  Why do I always hear this from the Nadar/Dean squad...No one votes for us because they don't have a voice...?

The GOP is pretty happy with what they got.  Sure they will dump Bush and his lot as soon as they can but the rank and file is not upset its a christian party.

Thats where you and Dean are 100% wrong.  More democrats are uncomfertable being in the less-christian party than republicans are uncomfertable being in the more christian party.  And of the Republicans who are uncomfertable many of them are sooooooo far right that they are less comfertable in Blue land with us.

Christian-ness is a GOP wedge.

Think of it as their racism.
We can say anything about racism because we are against it and clearly the party most against it.
Many of theirs are uncomfertable being in the more racist party and very very few of ours are uncomfertable being in the less racist party.

Sure many of us are not Al Sharpton/Jesse Jackson level into the racism issue and may even not be fans of those who are.  But I would never ever ever consider switching sides based on GOPs view on racism.

Likewise there are almost zero GOP who will switch sides because the GOP is too christian.

Me and Dean are both wrong? (none / 0)

Oh, come on, now. You don't know what I think about things, so that was a silly thing to say.

However, I will tell you that I live in the middle of a lot of good Republicans who are very upset with their party.  They have no more say in their party than we have had in ours for a long time.

Hopefully we are fixing that problem.  Sorry you have so many issues with Howard Dean.  I think he is a pretty good guy and will accomplish a lot for the party.

Re: Why do you seem upset with me? (none / 0)

A good point, generally speaking.

I don't think Dean's comment was that big a deal, though.  I wouldn't have said it, but that's just me.

I know what Dean means though.
Sometimes, it can conceivably get lost in the soundbite culture.

But Dean is great for the organization of the party and fund-raising, and that's what really matters

Kudos (none / 0)

Kudos to both Durbin (my state rep!) and Howard Dean for having the cutzpah to tell it like it is.

And boo to DonkeyKong, who is obsessed with finding a way to try and criticize Howard Dean in 99.999% of his posts/diaries. And he's been doing it for about 2 years now lol....

Re: Kudos (none / 0)

Nadar? Is that the love child of M.A.S.H.'s cross dressing Radar and Ralph Nader?

Your statement above is so intellectually bankrupt that I refuse to directly address it - other than to make poor jokes like the one above...
